Ackerhalle Berlin: a historic shopping experience with a modern flair

It's no secret that Berlin is a shopper's paradise. I particularly like the market halls where you have a lot of choice in one place, for example Markthalle Neun or Marheinekehalle. During my last visit to Berlin in June, I was pleasantly surprised by the Ackerhalle on Invalidenstraße in Berlin Mitte. If you don't know the dimensions of the interior, you experience a wow effect when you first enter.

The hall impresses with its airy expanse, glass dome and basilica architecture. The large windows let in plenty of natural light and the modern steel structures are reminiscent of traditional market stalls. The building was erected in 1888 as one of 14 municipal market halls and is a listed building. The Ackerhalle is the only one whose exterior façade has been preserved in its original state.

Since 2016, it has been home to a spacious REWE store with an enormous range of over 23,000 items on 2,171 square meters of retail space. In addition to a large selection of groceries, there are service counters, food services such as a deli with seating, a salad bar and a sushi station.

My tip: If you're out and about in Berlin, be sure to stop by – the Ackerhalle is more than just a supermarket. It is a shopping experience with a piece of living Berlin history.
