Pour out your container recycling and walk away: TOMRA R1 previews Express returns

Multi-feed reverse vending and digital payout gives shoppers first fully-automated recycling experience

Hard on the heels of the launch of the new TOMRA R1 “multi-feed” reverse vending solution, global reverse lending leader TOMRA is taking recycling automation up a notch with the unveiling of the Express returns concept. TOMRA R1 enables people to pour over 100 empty drink containers into the machine in one go, and now Express lets recyclers leave the TOMRA R1 while the machine is still processing the containers. The recycling refund will be received electronically once the processing is complete.

With no need for recyclers to manually handle each container or wait at the machine to receive a voucher, TOMRA R1 with Express is the first completely automated container recycling experience, offering an even more convenient and user-friendly experience. “TOMRA R1 with Express returns is like the self-driving car of container recycling. Hands-free, mess-free and wait-free, this fundamentally transforms the way people recycle,” said Harald Henriksen, Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions.

TOMRA R1 is available to order in Norway and Sweden, and will roll out to Germany and other markets in the months ahead. Retailers are invited to test the Express concept. TOMRA R1 and Express will be on show at EuroShop, the world’s largest retail trade fair, on 16-20 February in Dusseldorf.

How does it work?
At TOMRA R1, recyclers simply open the hatch and pour their empty cans and plastic bottles into the machine, and close the lid to begin the counting and sorting process. They then receive the voucher with their deposit refund.

For TOMRA R1s equipped with Express, recyclers begin their session by scanning a QR code on the machine’s display screen. After pouring in their containers and closing the lid, consumers can simply walk away and start their shopping. They then receive their deposit back via an electronic voucher.

Express powered by TOMRA Digital
Express is available via TOMRA’s Consumer Engagement API, which can be provided for integration with retailers’ existing apps and loyalty programs. For retailers that do not have their own apps, it can also be included in the myTOMRA app, part of the TOMRA portfolio of digital products for extending the value of using and owning a reverse vending machine.

Recyclers’ deposit refunds can be paid out electronically as a digital voucher for redeeming in store towards their grocery bill. Paperless payout brings added benefit for the environment and is more convenient for both consumers and retailers.

As well as digital payout of deposits, the myTOMRA app can show users a map overview of their nearest reverse vending machines, as well as whether those machines are currently open and available. Users can also log into a personal recycling session at the reverse vending machine to track their recycling progress and achievements.

myTOMRA functionality can be integrated with retailers’ existing apps and loyalty programs via APIs, or used as a stand-alone app. The myTOMRA app has over 350,000 users in Australia and US and is available free in Google Play and the Apple App Store.

TOMRA R1 results in more store visits and spending
Tailored to larger stores and redemption facilities collecting high volumes of containers, TOMRA R1 attracts visitors and increases the volume of containers returned, which can lead to increased loyalty and revenues for retailers.

Stores that tested out TOMRA R1 – even before the introduction of Express – saw an up to 60% increase in the number of consumer recycling sessions compared to the year before, and up to 218% more containers returned.

Retailers can contact TOMRA or their local TOMRA representative to arrange a demonstration of the new TOMRA R1 multi-feed reverse vending solution and Express returns.

TOMRA at EuroShop spotlights new reverse vending products and the future of recycling

Latest reverse vending innovations for stores and industry insights at world’s largest retail trade fair, in Dusseldorf on 16-20 February

The future opportunities and impacts of recycling will be in the spotlight at EuroShop for global reverse vending leader TOMRA, which seeks to make drink container recycling work harder for retailers through new reverse vending technologies.

“Since the last EuroShop in 2017, awareness of plastic pollution has sky-rocketed and the world has truly woken up to the plastic waste crisis. In selling beverage containers and receiving them back for recycling, retailers play the most visible and vital role in the recycling process,” said Harald Henriksen, Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions.

“At EuroShop 2020, our focus is how we can put recycling to work for retailers, to maximize the positive impact for their customers, their business and the planet. We want to look not only at what recycling is today, but the opportunities for what it can be in future.”

TOMRA provides reverse vending solutions for Clean Loop Recycling of empty beverage containers, particularly in markets with container deposit legislation where retailers often receive bottles and cans back for recycling. Clean Loop Recycling means containers can be turned back into new bottles and cans, reducing reliance on raw materials and keeping containers out of our oceans, streets and landfills. Together with its retail customers, TOMRA collects 40 billion drink containers every year for reuse and recycling in over 60 markets.

Reverse vending innovations in equipment, software and services
TOMRA will showcase at EuroShop reverse vending innovations to attract more recycling consumers to stores, through a greater recycling experience.
  • The brand new TOMRA R1 makes its trade fair debut at EuroShop. This “multi-feed” reverse vending solution enables recyclers to pour over 100 empty beverage containers into the machine in one go, rather than insert each container one by one. It offers a more convenient and user-friendly recycling experience that’s up to five times faster than single-feed machines. Join a presentation on attracting customers with a great recycling experience and demonstration of TOMRA R1, at TOMRA’s booth on Sunday 16 February at 3pm.
  • Another concept on show is the new, small-footprint TOMRA M1 reverse vending machine (RVM), specifically designed for smaller stores. The solution is compact and affordable, and yet has capacity to handle three different types of container materials.
  • The myTOMRA consumer engagement app is expanding its reach. Users can now scan with their mobile a QR code shown on the RVM screen, rather than stores installing a physical barcode reader. Part of the TOMRA portfolio of digital products, myTOMRA enables consumers to log into a personal recycling session, see their nearest RVMs on a map and track their recycling achievements.
  • TOMRA will also showcase its newest developments in service, especially how TOMRA employs big data analytics to keep reverse vending systems working harder and longer for retailers. Proactive service and maximum uptime ensure retailers can focus on what’s most important for them: their customers.
TOMRA talks the future of recycling
TOMRA will reveal insights into the industry and future of recycling at its new TOMRA Talks series. In short presentations at TOMRA’s stand, TOMRA experts and its external community of thought leaders and partners will discuss innovations and learnings that make recycling a win for consumers, business and the environment. (Stay tuned to tomra.com/euroshop2020 for the full agenda.) Some of the speakers include:
  • Stefan Ranstrand, President & CEO of TOMRA, on business working together to fight plastic littering
  • Christin Håland, Project Manager at Red Cross, and Lisa Kristiina Mølmen, Chief Business Development Officer at The Recycling Lottery, on the Recycling Lottery and impact of retail on the bigger picture
  • Clarissa Morawski, CEO of Reloop Platform, on what the Single-Use Plastics Directive means for retailers
  • Emily Penn, Co-founder of eXXpedition, on the rise of ocean plastic pollution
  • Manuel Tessloff, CEO of ReAct, on the Internet of Things and digital collaboration in the retail space
On the EuroShop Retail Technology Stage, stores can gain insight into using retail equipment data to increase customer satisfaction and revenue, in a presentation by Steve Mellbye-Stølen, Product Manager SaaS & Applications at TOMRA Collections Solutions. (Sunday 16 February, 12:40-1:00 pm.)

Now recyclers can empty an entire bag of drink containers in seconds: introducing TOMRA R1 at EuroShop

Multi-feed reverse vending solution gives shoppers more attractive, convenient recycling experience

Global reverse vending leader TOMRA has unveiled the highly-anticipated TOMRA R1, which enables recyclers to pour over 100 empty beverage containers into the machine in one go – rather than inserting them one by one.

Tailored to larger stores and redemption facilities collecting high volumes of containers, TOMRA R1 offers a more user-friendly and convenient recycling experience. This can attract store visitors and increase the volume of containers returned, leading to increased loyalty and revenues for retailers. TOMRA R1 is available to order in Norway and Sweden, and will roll out in Germany and other markets in the months ahead.

TOMRA R1 will make its trade show debut at EuroShop, the world’s largest retail trade fair, on 16-20 February in Dusseldorf. Retailers can join a presentation on attracting customers with a great recycling experience and demonstration of TOMRA R1 at TOMRA’s EuroShop booth, on Sunday 16 February at 3pm, in Hall 7A, stand number B07. (Follow tomra.com/euroshop2020 for the schedule of talks.)

“The machine is totally fantastic! Customers love it, and we definitely have customers coming to the store because of it,” explained Fredrik Hallenstvedt, Store Manager at Meny Borreveien in Norway, one of the testing locations for TOMRA R1. “Since installing the machine we have experienced over 200% growth in the volume of containers compared to the year before.”

How does it work?
Shoppers simply open the hatch and pour their empty cans and plastic bottles into the machine, and close the lid to begin the counting and sorting process. They then collect their voucher and start shopping. Ineligible containers are returned to the user via the reject chute.

Attractive recycling results in more store visits and spending
The multi-feed TOMRA R1 has been tested in the field by retailers and recyclers in Norway and Sweden since 2016. Test stores registered an up to 60% increase in the number of consumer recycling sessions compared to the year before, and up to 218% more containers returned. Consumer response to TOMRA R1 has been enormous, with a demonstration video uploaded to social media by one of the tests stores now viewed over 425,000 times. Making recycling easy for consumers also enables retailers to demonstrate their sustainability commitments.

With an accessible product design, the new TOMRA R1 is easy to clean and maintain. TOMRA R1 is also the first reverse vending machine with a backroom-facing operator screen located inside the machine, so store personnel have all the information they need at their fingertips.

For recyclers, TOMRA R1 provides a mess-free recycling experience as there is no need to handle each bottle – so consumers can do their part for the planet without getting their hands sticky. TOMRA R1 is also intuitive to use, reduces queues, and offers efficient and fast recycling. When returning over 100 beverage containers, recycling at TOMRA R1 is up to five times faster than using a single-feed solution, since containers do not need to be inserted one by one.

“TOMRA R1 enables stores and redemption centers to offer the best recycling experience and truly wow their customers,” said Harald Henriksen, Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions. “The multi-feed concept fundamentally transforms the recycling experience. During our tests we have seen recyclers come with trailers full of containers, drive past other stores in order to use TOMRA R1, and tag family and friends on social media encouraging them to try it out.”

Features at a glance
Bringing together the premium products from different categories in TOMRA’s reverse vending portfolio, TOMRA R1 can pair with the T9 reverse vending machine to add handling of glass containers, and connect to TOMRA’s MultiPac Air high-speed, high-capacity storage cabinets.

TOMRA partners with retailers on TOMRA R1 in offering reverse vending as a service, not merely being a supplier of machinery. As well as the cutting-edge reverse vending equipment, TOMRA is offering the product as part of an all-inclusive package:

  • Digital: Digital tools to help stores work more efficiently (including Notify+Assist Premium notification tools and Weekly Analytics reports for customer and personnel insights).
  • Service: TOMRA’s first-class Customer Care for priority servicing, preventive maintenance, repairs, remote monitoring, and hotline and in-store support.
TOMRA R1 is powered by TOMRA Flow Technology for industry-leading recognition and system integrity, and compatible with TOMRA’s full portfolio of Digital products, which add value for both recyclers and retailers.

For redemption centers, TOMRA R1 empowers facilities to move toward automated returns and away from manual, over-the-counter handling of containers, or to increase a facility’s capacity by moving from single-feed machines to multi-feed offerings.

Retailers can contact TOMRA or their local TOMRA representative to arrange a demonstration of the new TOMRA R1 multi-feed reverse vending solution.

Notes for editors
Quotes from store managers testing out TOMRA R1:
  • “The machine is totally fantastic! Customers love it, and the machine definitely attracts more people to our store. Since installing the machine we have experienced over 200% growth in the volume of containers compared to the year before.”
  • “We have gotten a lot of positive feedback. We have customers saying ‘since your store has such a nice machine, we will buy our groceries here at the same time’.”
  • “I am really happy with it. Customers come to our store to recycle, and then do their shopping here, too. We recently had two new competitors move next door, but we are still experiencing growth. I believe the new machine is a contributing factor.”

TOMRA offers European retailers insights into reverse vending recycling at EuroShop

Early look at container deposit schemes and impact on plastic waste, at world’s largest retail trade fair in Dusseldorf on 16-20 February

European retailers can get ahead on retail involvement in future beverage container recycling programs, at the booth of global reverse vending leader TOMRA during EuroShop 2020. Regions such as Scotland, Portugal and England & Wales are set to introduce container deposit schemes in the next three years, and such schemes sometimes legislate the involvement of stores in receiving plastic bottles back for recycling. The European Union has also set out new goals for the collection of plastic bottles.

“Retailers curious about the role of supermarkets and other grocery stores in container recycling can get ahead of the pack at EuroShop, with early insight into upcoming requirements and the kind of programs and retail equipment that achieve those recycling goals,” explained Harald Henriksen, Head of TOMRA Collection Solutions.

What can container deposit schemes mean for retailers?
As well as local legislation already slated for the next three years, the Single-Use Plastics Directive adopted in 2019 by the Council of the European Union has set out for member states to collect 90% of all plastic bottles by 2029, with an interim goal of 77% by 2025. These goals seek to curb the alarming growth of plastic pollution worldwide, particularly marine litter.

Container deposit schemes are one way to achieve high return rates for plastic bottles. These schemes work by adding a small extra deposit on top of the price of a beverage, which is refunded to the consumer when they return the empty drink container for recycling. By incentivizing the return of containers, this gives the material a financial value and communicates its value for society. Existing container deposit schemes see up to 99% of all drink containers returned for recycling; no other waste collection systems reach such return rates.

Many markets worldwide have already adopted container deposit schemes, and often include “return-to-retail” legislation that requires stores selling beverage containers to also collect them for recycling after use. The world’s eight best-performing container deposit schemes employ return-to-retail collection, achieving an average return rate of 93%. Container deposit schemes without retail involvement average 77% returns, with some markets as low as 48%.

In a return-to-retail model, stores attract footfall from recyclers, and gain an opportunity to help recycle a retail product that can otherwise end up polluting streets, parks and oceans. Consumers benefit from a recycling location that’s convenient and already part of their routine. Consumers around the world are eager to be a part of the solution to the plastic waste challenge, with research in 15 countries showing that a median of 80% of the public are in favor of introducing deposit legislation. Container deposit schemes are an opportunity for retailers to engage with their customers on issues they care about.

To make the en masse return of containers more efficient for both consumers and stores, container deposit schemes often use “reverse vending machines” to analyze and sort containers when they are collected for recycling. These machines instantly count the number of containers returned, sort away ineligible containers, and pay out the correct deposit refund to recyclers – much faster than is possible through manual, human handling.
