Actively shaping urban retail: Retail Design StudioKÖ in Düsseldorf

The Retail Design StudioKÖ in Düsseldorf's KÖ Galerie is an impressive example of how vacant retail spaces can be transformed into lively, versatile urban spaces. The project by Hochschule Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with renowned partners from business and industry transforms 150 m² of vacant space into an open space for exchange, education, creativity and inspiration.

On July 2, I was able to attend the opening and take away many exciting ideas. The reason is highly topical: brick-and-mortar retail is increasingly shifting to digital, leaving space in city centers unused. This is why new approaches to use are so important. Where traditional retail concepts are reaching their limits, opportunities are emerging for collaborative offerings and mixed use, which can revitalize our city centres in the long term.

StudioKÖ is emblematic of this change. It is a laboratory for mixed-use concepts, a space for experiments – but also a statement: we as an industry and society can actively shape city centers. The combination of design, urban development and education can be experienced here. For me, this is an exciting project and a strong signal – even beyond Düsseldorf.
