Upcycling in store design: transforming waste into valuable materials

Two groundbreaking projects demonstrate how upcycled materials can be used innovatively and with added value: C&A integrates denim waste into store flooring, while the Cukiernia patisserie impresses with wall cladding made from eggshell plaster. The material used for the floors originates from C&A’s FIT (Factory for Innovation in Textiles) in Mönchengladbach. Approximately one kilogram of denim waste is processed per square meter of flooring. Developed by Swiss company LICO, the flooring combines recycled materials like denim fabric, cork underlays, and wooden panels. Natural binders such as plant-based oils and natural rubber ensure the durability needed for high-traffic retail environments.

These floors offer more than a sustainable solution for textile waste – they provide a unique selling point in store design. Shoppers can use QR codes to learn more about the origin and processing of the materials, creating a direct link to the theme of sustainability. The campaign "You Are Walking on Denim" ties this message creatively into the shopping experience.

The gastronomy sector is also exploring the potential of upcycled materials. A remarkable example is the Cukiernia patisserie in Lviv, designed by the YOD Group. The highlight of its interior is a wall system made from eggshell plaster – an innovative material developed specifically for this project, combining sustainability with symbolic meaning.

Eggs are a central ingredient in Cukiernia’s pastries. Local poultry farms supplied over 1,300 kilograms of white and 200 kilograms of brown eggshells, which were cleaned, dried, and processed into a smooth yet visually distinctive plaster. After extensive experimentation, the team achieved the perfect balance of aesthetics and functionality.

This material integrates seamlessly into a design concept that combines Italian marble, light wood, and brass. The décor is complemented by restored furniture from the Lviv Secession and modern lighting. This fusion of tradition and contemporary sustainability earned Cukiernia the prestigious Best of Best Award from the Architecture Masterprize.

Projects like these illustrate how environmental consciousness can be actively incorporated into brand communication while showcasing the pivotal role of sustainable concepts in purchasing decisions – a fact confirmed by studies.
