The concept of "Autonomous Stores" as part of a "Seamless Stores" vision, enabled by the development of artificial intelligence (AI), is not new. Amazon debuted the first automated convenience store in 2016.
The tech giant went on to open its first “Go” store to the public in 2018, and now has 46 Go stores across the US and UK. Its checkout-free system is also used in 55 other travel, leisure and hospitality stores.
Amazon has rolled its so-called Just Walk Out system for the purchase, checkout, and payment of a retail transaction to its Fresh and Whole Foods Market stores, along with its Dash cart for larger grocery shops.
BingoBox opened its first automated convenience stores in Shanghai in 2017, featuring WeChat-facilitated shopper identification. Since launch, it has opened over 300 locations across China to date.
