Thin clients key to companies gaining full management, security and TCO benefits of desktop virtualization
Reading, UK. October 26, 2010: IGEL Technology today said it was ideally positioned to meet the Desktop Virtualization demand forecast for 2011, by leading technology analysts Gartner, as companies turn to thin clients to take advantage of the desktop revolution.
Globally, 42% of companies plan to begin or continue investing in desktop virtualization before the end of 2011, predicts Gartner in its latest Computer Hardware Market Insight report published on October 19th, 2010. And the study found that infrastructure consolidation (45%) and application management (38%) are the two main drivers for desktop virtualization.
“It is clear that as companies consider the best hardware for their next wave of desktop investment the use of the traditional PC is being re-evaluated by many organisations,” said Simon Richards, IGEL’s UK General Manager. “Thin client, such as IGEL Universal Desktops, are purpose designed to access a virtual desktop environment ensuring businesses can realise the management, security and TCO promises of virtualisation.”
Simon added that IGEL had already seen the beginning of this next major desktop investment phase with 73% UK growth in the first half of 2010. IGEL saw a 64% increase in its traditional thin client business and a 9% increase in its Universal Desktop Converter software licenses, which allow businesses to convert old PCs and thin clients into IGEL thin clients. The major growth sectors were in healthcare, local government and retail.
IGEL Universal Desktops are proving popular because they are ideal for a centrally managed or virtualized environment. With no moving parts, they are reliable, secure from viruses, environmentally friendly in power consumption and sleek in design for today’s desktops. Combined with IGEL’s Universal Management Suite of software, which comes free with each IGEL device, businesses are able to minimise deployment, administration and maintenance costs by managing quickly and efficiently from a central location.
