The world’s first integration gives IGEL Linux customers access to functionality offered by Microsoft Windows Server 2008
Reading. UK – June 21, 2010 – IGEL Technology today announced that it has integrated Microsoft’s Terminal Services RemoteApp functionality into the latest version of its Linux thin client firmware. By adding code to the open source rdesktop RDP client, IGEL can now offer its Linux customers access to useful Microsoft Windows Server 2008 functionality, which reduces IT complexity and administrative overhead.
Terminal Services RemoteApp (TS RemoteApp) enables organizations to provide users access to standard Windows®-based programs from virtually any location. TS RemoteApp makes programs that are accessed remotely through Terminal Services appear as if they are running on the end user's local desktop. These programs are referred to as RemoteApp programs. Instead of being presented to the user in the desktop of the remote terminal server, the RemoteApp program is integrated with the client's desktop.
The RemoteApp program runs in its own resizable window, can be dragged between multiple monitors, and has its own entry in the taskbar. If a user is running more than one RemoteApp program on the same terminal server, the RemoteApp programs will share the same Terminal Services session.
For businesses, TS RemoteApp can significantly reduce complexity and administrative overhead in many situations, including:
• Branch offices, where there may be limited local IT support and limited network bandwidth.
• Situations where users need to access programs remotely.
• Deployment of line-of-business (LOB) programs, especially custom LOB programs.
• Environments, such as hot desk workspaces, where users do not have assigned computers.
• Deployment of multiple versions of a program, particularly if installing multiple versions locally would cause conflicts.
“This world’s first integration is yet further proof of IGEL’s leading position in Linux development for the thin client environment,” said Simon Richards, UK General Manager at IGEL Technology. “With this latest RDP client, Microsoft’s RemoteApp functionality can be used by both IGEL’s Microsoft Windows Embedded and Linux thin client customers.”
The latest Linux RDP client is available immediately and free of charge to existing IGEL customers. For further information visit: www.igel.com.
