Launching TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus: outdoor reverse vending machine built for rain, hail or shine

Global reverse vending leader  TOMRA Collection  has today unveiled the  TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus  reverse vending machine (RVM) for collecting drink containers for recycling. In many geographies,  RVMs  are typically located indoors at return points such as stores, or even airports or educational institutions. However, as  deposit return schemes  (legislation to incentivize drink container recycling) launch in more regions, return points are finding new locations and looking to outdoor solutions. Today, TOMRA expands its portfolio of outdoor solutions with the launch of the robust, all-weather TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus.

Poland, which launched its new deposit return scheme on 1 October 2025, was the first market to welcome TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus.

Free-standing and built to withstand the elements, TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus is designed for stores that want to preserve valuable indoor retail floorspace, while still offering customers a convenient way to return their beverage containers. TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus can accept PET bottles, cans and reusable glass bottles. Single-use bottles can be handled via an integrated glass crusher configuration within the machine. Powered by TOMRA Flow Technology™, users can return containers in a continuous, secure, and rapid flow, minimizing wait times and ensuring a smooth recycling experience.

Focus on durability and modular design

Engineered for exceptional durability and reliable operation outdoors, TOMRA S2 Rugged Plus’s robust steel cabinets are designed to withstand rain, snow, and sun. Its powder-coated and galvanized sheet metal ensures the product maintains its appearance over the years, and its bright, high-visibility touchscreen remains readable even in direct sunlight.

The machine’s high-capacity bins (taking two 1/1 EU pallets) reduce the need for frequent staff intervention. At the same time, the modular design allows retailers to expand functionality, such as adding a SoftDrop module to handle reusable glass bottles or adding an extra storage module to expand storage space.
