First camera with ARTPEC-9: Axis Communications launches AXIS Q1728 Block Camera

Ismaning, January 20, 2025 - Axis Communications , a technology leader in network video, launches the AXIS Q1728 Block Camera, the first network camera based on Axis' new ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip. It features two different lenses for excellent image quality, even in challenging lighting conditions, and powerful AI-based analytics at the edge. Its standardized design fits most enclosures, including those from Axis and other manufacturers.

The AXIS Q1728 Block Camera is the first network camera from Axis based on the new  ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip  . This system-on-chip was specifically developed by Axis for the needs of the security industry and supports – for the first time in video security – the open-source AV1 video codec from the Alliance for Open Media (AOM). In the area of AI-based video analytics, the system-on-chip also enables more precise and differentiated classification between different object classes – with high image quality, low bit rate, and enhanced cybersecurity.

An integrated Deep Learning Processing Unit (DLPU) and the pre-installed  AXIS Object Analytics  analytics solution enable advanced and powerful analytics in real time and "at the edge," i.e., directly on the camera itself. This enables the camera to better detect, classify, and count people, vehicles, and vehicle types.  Axis Zipstream  with AV1 and H.264/H.265 support reduces bandwidth and storage requirements, enabling seamless video transmission both on-premises and in the cloud.  AXIS Image Health Analytics  safeguards image quality and the camera's field of view,  while AXIS Live Privacy Shield  provides AI-based dynamic masking to ensure privacy and data protection. Device security is ensured by  Axis Edge Vault  , a hardware-based cybersecurity platform certified to the US FIPS 140-3 Level 3 cybersecurity standard.

Flexible, high-quality image quality in 4K

The 8-megapixel camera, particularly suitable for indoor applications, offers excellent 4K image quality at 60 frames per second. The large 1/1.2" sensor ensures high light sensitivity even in difficult lighting conditions and at night. The camera features the proven  Lightfinder 2.0  technology and  Forensic WDR  .

The camera is available with both a wide-angle lens (6 to 13 mm with a horizontal field of view of 108° to 49°) for use in wide, open areas, and a telephoto lens (15 to 48 mm with a horizontal field of view of 42° to 13°) for use cases requiring high detail at long distances. Both lenses feature remote zoom and focus functions.

Standardized design for maximum flexibility

Lightweight and compact, AXIS Q1728 Block Camera offers flexible installation in common housings, both Axis's own and custom-built or third-party housings. It's also backward compatible, allowing it to be installed in existing outdoor housings. This allows for reuse of existing housings, making AXIS Q1728 a particularly sustainable and environmentally friendly solution.

"With the AXIS Q1728 Block Camera, we've created another future-proof solution for video-based security with excellent image quality," says Jochen Sauer, Architect & Engineering Manager at Axis Communications. "Based on our new ARTPEC-9 system-on-chip, it's capable of performing AI-based image analysis even faster, more efficiently, and over greater distances. Thanks to ARTPEC-9, it also supports the AV1 video codec for the first time in video security. AV1 is considered significantly more efficient than H.264 and H.265, offers improved compression, and delivers high-quality video at lower bit rates. This reduces storage and bandwidth costs without losing forensic detail or clarity. Axis Communications is the first company in the video security industry to introduce AV1 support with the ARTPEC-9."

The most important features of the AXIS Q1728 Block Camera at a glance:

  • Excellent picture quality in 4K
  • Available with wide-angle or telephoto lens
  • Next-generation AI-powered analytics
  • First-time support for the AV1 video codec of the Alliance for Open Media (AOM)
