Bridging Theory and Practice: HS Worms Students Visit METRO

How modern retail processes, professional customer interactions, and digital developments intersect in the wholesale sector was something a group of our IM/HM students experienced firsthand during an excursion to METRO Deutschland GmbH in Düsseldorf. This on-site visit offered a unique opportunity to explore one of the leading international wholesale companies up close – professionally, strategically, and personally.

For many students, it was their first time getting a behind-the-scenes look at a wholesaler that supplies restaurants, retailers, and other professional customer groups every day. Insights like these vividly demonstrate the diverse tasks, challenges, and opportunities within B2B wholesale. At the same time, it became clear how dynamically the industry continues to evolve. Digital services, new communication channels, and rising customer expectations regarding service, transparency, and sustainability increasingly shape the field.

This made the direct exchange with the on-site team even more valuable. Our students gained insights into decision-making processes in wholesale and the importance of collaboration and professional communication. They also saw how METRO promotes modern ways of working and positions itself as an attractive employer for skilled professionals and young talent. Particularly fascinating was observing how theoretical knowledge is applied in everyday business life and the wide range of career paths the industry offers.

It was especially impressive for the group to see how consistently METRO places its customers at the center of everything it does with high quality standards, strong accountability, and a pronounced service orientation. It became clear that success in wholesale is built above all on close customer relationships and continuous innovation, not solely on assortment and logistics.

“With our excursions, we want to provide students with a realistic and hands-on insight into the METRO world. Our work is versatile and dynamic, and that’s exactly what we want to make tangible while inspiring students to get excited about METRO early on.”

(Luisa Klingen, Employer Branding Manager, METRO Deutschland GmbH)

Once again, the excursion demonstrated how valuable the close connection between academia and practice at Hochschule Worms truly is. Students gain real-world insights and orientation, while companies get the opportunity to meet potential future talent and benefit from fresh perspectives coming from the university.

We therefore warmly invite other companies to connect with us and jointly develop practice-oriented formats such as excursions, workshops, cooperation projects, or guest lectures. Take the opportunity to get to know potential future specialists early and bring practical impulses into your organization!
