Artificial intelligence is no longer just a digital promise, it is rapidly becoming a decisive lever for competitiveness in the retail sector. Whether intelligent sales forecasting, autonomous purchasing agents, AI-driven analytics for video-based security systems from companies like Axis Communications, or smart assistant systems such as Bütema’s “KIra”—AI is transforming processes, customer experiences, and business models.
Yet no system can unfold its full potential unless it is designed by people who understand its opportunities and can assess its risks. This is exactly where Worms University of Applied Sciences comes in, educating the talent that retail companies urgently need.
At Worms University, new scientific insights flow directly into student work and into collaborations with industry partners. Our professors conduct research on key questions of AI development that are highly relevant to the retail sector. Professors Moerke and Sessler, together with master’s student Wrobbel, for example, have explored how algorithms can unintentionally generate distortions and what forms of discrimination may arise as a result. An issue of immense importance, particularly in video-based analytics or automated decision-making systems used by retail companies.
Professors Bruno and Ohlwein, in another line of research, analysed the effects of personalized pricing and demonstrated that data-driven price strategies are only sustainably successful when they are perceived as fair and respect social norms.
This research provides valuable impulses for companies that want not only to implement AI solutions but to shape them consciously and responsibly. It forms the foundation for educating professionals at Worms University who combine technical understanding with strong analytical judgment. As a result, our students bring exactly the expertise the retail sector will need in an AI-driven future.
While EuroShop 2026 will showcase the latest AI applications in stores, logistics, and customer experience, Worms University of Applied Sciences demonstrates how the underlying knowledge is created and how companies can benefit from it. Through research collaborations, knowledge transfer, and access to highly qualified young professionals. This gives retail companies the opportunity to help shape innovation early and attract talent capable of putting AI-based solutions into practice.
We invite you to get to know Worms University of Applied Sciences, our students, and our diverse areas of specialization in person. Take the opportunity to meet us at EuroShop.
