The Southern Co-operative

cdw+partners are a specialist design consultancy bringing two and three dimensional expressions to retail brands.

Founded in 1981, as the Creative Design Workshop, we have over 35 years experience of providing independent thinking, innovative and creative user focused brand and coWhen The Southern Co-operative asked us to design their new store format for Freshwater on the Isle of Wight it presented some key opportunities that we believed the new design needed to deliver. These included a differentiated community store proposition with personality and theatre, that delivers local values and champions ‘local hero’ suppliers and producers.

The new store has been designed to increase appeal to a broader demographic and challenge the local competition, whilst not alienating the existing loyal customer base. Accessibility has been a priority throughout with greater parking availability, wider aisles to aid access and clear category zoning and communication to improve navigation and flow through the store. The communication throughout the store highlights the Southern Co-operatives ‘local flavours’ initiative whilst the environment itself has been designed to showcase the provenance of product from local suppliers and producers.

The new store has proved quite a hit with Freshwater locals and those from further afield. Initial results have seen a substantial uplift in sales on a daily basis outside the tourist season.mmunication solutions for all our clients.

With what sounds like a straightforward brief of ‘let’s do this properly’ we set out to radically challenge and reimagine the way in which people think about flooring in their homes. In terms of customer experience, flooring retail has lagged behind other retail sectors for decades.

Most customers’ perception of flooring stores are of overcrowded, dusty warehouses with a bewildering range of choice and price points. The customer feels they lack the knowledge to be in control of the decision making process and the traditional sales person holds all the cards.
Every aspect of the new brand, brand communication and store concept, has been considered in making the customer journey as easy and pleasurable as possible. The aim to bring the transformational effect that flooring has on our homes to the forefront.

The first store opened on Tooting High Street, London, on the 30th of May with rapid national expansion plans for  200 stores.

Mothercare Flagship Stores

Oxford Street landmark store for Mothercare.

Building on our work on the out of town stores we created a more fashion focussed proposition, expressing Mothercare’s mission and heritage as a supporting partner in parenting since 1961.

Part of the challenge was to take a retail offer that fills 17,000 sq ft, relocate it to a site opposite, while maintaining the same product range within a two floor 7,500 sq ft store; providing more authority, a significantly better customer experience, within a challenging capex and delivering a significant increase in store performance.
