METRICS: Retail Store Optimization

Delivering sales lift and gross margin increase: METRICS
METRICS empowers retailers with end-to-end, item-level visibility and real-time analytics, providing complete transparency of in-store business across the retailer’s organization. This visibility throughout the supply chain enables management to optimize store and shelf availability of merchandise, resulting in sales that were previously lost to stock-outs.

METRICS works with all high-performance RAIN RFID inlays and tags, and fixed RAIN RFID readers.

How the Internet of Things Can Help Grow Your Retail Business
Retailers can enhance sales conversion in stores, while at the same time growing their online business through direct shipping from in-store stock. All they need is one simple thing: comprehensive item-level visibility in real time! Today, this can be achieved with METRICS, an analytics solution based on SMART COSMOS, our state-of-the-art Internet of Things Cloud Services platform.

A famous clothing brand and retailer with a chain of outlet stores and an e-commerce site was all too familiar with two core challenges. In retail stores with manual inventory counts, the level of accuracy could be as low as 60-70 percent. That inevitably leads to missed sales and disappointed shoppers due to out-of-stock situations in stores as well as online. On top of that, the conversion of on-shelf apparel to the point of sale wasn’t very transparent. They knew what customers would buy, of course, but typically didn’t have much visibility into how often items were considered or tried on in a fitting room before being bought.

Significant Sales Lift and Gross Margin Increase
With the help of SMARTRAC and its RFID solution-building expertise, that famous apparel maker addressed those challenges. In mid-January, a live demonstration of the proof of concept was presented to the public at Retail’s Big Show in New York: the innovative in-store analytics solution METRICS, which leverages the Internet of Things on retail premises. Based on the IoT platform SMART COSMOS, RAIN RFID tags and network-connected RFID sensors, METRICS empowers retailers and brand owners with end-to-end supply-chain visibility and real-time analytics. These analytics provide comprehensive reports to optimize store and shelf availability of merchandise, increasing customer satisfaction. In the long run, the deployment of METRICS in stores can lead to significant sales lifts, labor savings and strong improvements in gross margin.

METRICS tells which item converts well and where improvements are necessary.
The METRICS solution utilizes real-time location data provided by SMARTRAC’s RAIN RFID inlays embedded in price tags, gathered via network-connected location sensors, to increase sales and thus improve gross margin in three different ways. First of all, stock-outs are drastically reduced. Second, by triggering automated replenishment actions, the effectiveness of the sales force is enhanced, freeing up more time for serving customers. Last but not least, sales at regular prices are increased by the optimization of in-store placement through consideration and conversion analytics.

Benefits for Store Operators and Product Designers
Significantly, METRICS also provides store operators with insight into in-store product consideration and conversion, empowering merchandizers to optimize product placement, and giving them unprecedented visibility into shopper engagement. By clearly understanding consideration versus conversion at the item level, smarter decisions can be made. In addition, the hands-free system gives 100% inventory visibility, helping to increase sales and decrease shrinkage, while fashion designers get faster and more precise feedback on the performance of their designs and patterns.

“By utilizing METRICS, retailers and brand owners can now maintain the highest level of inventory visibility needed to meet shoppers’ demands, lift their sales and improve their gross margin at the same time. Those benefits can only be achieved by analyzing real-time item location and data, and then displaying the results in tailored views that meet the needs of different departments and roles across a retailer’s organization,” says Leonard Nelson, Director Business Development Retail Intelligent Things Business Division, SMARTRAC TECHNOLOGY Group.

EXPERIENCES: Smart Brand Products

Delivering customer loyalty and engagement: EXPERIENCES
EXPERIENCES enables brand owners to turn physical products into digital connections, empowering brands to revolutionize customer journeys and product lifecycles. Enhanced item personalization adds a completely new interaction paradigm and unmatched value to traditional branded goods. EXPERIENCES’ dynamic content and analytics engine works with Near Field Communication (NFC) transponders and tags.

How NFC and the Internet of Things Create New EXPERIENCES
NFC is increasing brand loyalty for products like the revolutionary new Adidas x HYPEBEAST 10th ANNIVERSARY UltraBOOST UNCAGED sneaker, which made a big splash on SMARTRAC’s booth at Retail’s BIG Show in New York. Check out how NFC-equipped branded products are offering consumers totally new “EXPERIENCES”, enabled by an innovative Smart Cosmos-based IoT solution.

Using the innovative EXPERIENCES solution from SMARTRAC, brand owners can add digital value to products, delivering new experiences to consumers every time they tap on their product’s embedded NFC inlay.

Until now, most physical branded items or products have not had Internet connectivity and remain unconnected during their lifetime. The EXPERIENCES solution turns these offline physical objects (or things) into connected digital instances. All the consumer has to do is tap an NFC-enabled smartphone on the NFC inlay or “touchpoint”, which can be embedded in products, shelf talkers, out-of-home advertising displays or in other places accessible to the consumer.

Personalized Content…
Crucially, attractive and relevant content has to be delivered to the mobile device, to make the customer tap more than once or twice. EXPERIENCES takes care of that, enabling dynamic and personalized web-based content to be offered to the consumer. That content may include local points of interest, social media, news, music playlists, video content, transit schedules, weather and more, so that anytime the consumer taps, individualized content is delivered. Of course, this could always be a fairly generic mobile experience with the ability to sign up to an offer redeemable with the next brand purchase.

…Creating Exciting EXPERIENCES
Or it could be truly exclusive content, which is only available if the product, and thus the inlay, is within reach. Since that advanced content would be dynamic, it would change constantly, encouraging intensive engagement with the product and the brand. And as new data would be gathered with every interaction, more relevant and hyper-personalized content could be served to different groups of users. Things will not only be connected – they will be exciting for the consumer as well.

The EXPERIENCES Solution in a Nutshell
The IoT solution consists of specially programmed NFC inlays, which can be embedded in a broad variety of physical objects, and a content delivery engine. In addition, it incorporates a sophisticated user analytics dashboard and campaign management tool built to the requirements of marketers. The delivery engine and dashboard have proven their effectiveness in hundreds of successful campaigns for major consumer brands across multiple industries.

What EXPERIENCES can do for brand owners:
•Assign hyper-customized content, known as an “experience”, to specific sets of objects.
•Deliver targeted messaging providing direct outreach to customers for upcoming events, exclusive content and more.
•Serve tailored, specific product content to the smartphone, to make the experience feel like it came directly from the product itself.
•Provide product-specific data, such as color, size and style, that can be fully integrated into mobile content in real time.
•Enable sophisticated user analytics to enhance the mobile experience with dynamic, user-specific content, thereby continuing and improving the brand conversation beyond the point of sale.

Retail Technology

Enabling Next Generation Retail by Making Every Merchandise Smart
The retail industry is going through transformative changes. A growing number of retailers are taking big steps driven by the need to provide a differentiated customer experience, full Omni-channel integration, and improved margins. Many of them rely on new enabling technologies as mobile, cloud-based services, wireless in-store technologies, and RFID.

RFID is a key enabling technology as it can provide item-level visibility for almost any merchandise item. Visibility is the key foundation for new processes and applications being introduced in retail to optimize overall performance and enhance the shopper experience, such as factory to shelf asset tracking and inventory management, store optimization, self-checkout, loss prevention, returns management, smart mirrors and dressing rooms, location-based services, mobile shopping and promotions, and others.

Inventory Accuracy for Revenue Protection and Omni-channel Readiness
A barcoded stock file's accuracy ranges typically between 60% and 70% depending on the cycle of rectification. With RFID there is a real time 98% plus accuracy. A high degree of accuracy is important because it minimizes revenue loss due to out of stock situations and enables Omni-channel scenarios where customers could check item availability online prior to traveling to a store.

Loss Prevention
According to the Centre for Retail Research global financial losses due to retail shrinkage sum up to an average of 1.5 percent of sales representing a total value of more than 100 billion US$ annually. The three key causes ordered by magnitude are shoplifting, followed by employee theft and internal errors including mispricing, invoicing errors and administrative failure. RFID-based item-level tracking from factory to the store cashier can help to identify, monitor, and reduced shrinkage significantly.

Focusing on Customer Insights and Experience
Since the strong growth of online stores is driving more competitive shopping trends, the 'Know Your Individual Customer' is becoming more important to retailers in order to ensure customer satisfaction and loyalty. While the online world can analyze clicks and search entries very well a retail store has enormous potential to get insights into real world shopper behavior by leveraging RFID for in-store merchandise visibility as well as creating a superior customer experience through RFID assisted virtual mannequins or fitting rooms.

Supply Chain & Asset Management

RFID in supply chain management has the capacity to significantly improve global logistic chains and increase overall efficiency by automating the identification processes. Major retailers and their suppliers are already tagging pallets, cases and other returnable transport items (RTIs) like plastic crates used for fresh foods.

RFID features many benefits to manufacturers, distributors and retailers:
•Better traceability and visibility
•Minimized possibility for human errors
•Secured availability of goods
•Reliable information of products origin
•Better customer service
•Process optimization and faster billing
•Optimization of shipping papers

Parcel and Postal Services
RFID is used in postal environments to improve item tracking during sorting and delivery. Because RFID doesn’t require a line of sight for information transfer, postal items can be routed without concerns over their physical orientation.

RFID technology reduces the time needed to process mail bags and boxes because the RFID tags can be tracked automatically as they move through various stages in the processing cycle. Multiple items can be read simultaneously.

Waste Management
RFID technology is suited to accelerate processes and improve efficiency by providing a fast and reliable identification and data collection process. Further optimization potential comes with the ability to not only track collection and weight of individual waste containers but to also use the collected data to improve truck usage and route planning.

By linking the container to a specific household or company and with an integrated RFID system in place, RFID technology enables automated data collection at all stages of the waste management and recycling process. Thereby, manual data collection is replaced by a smart, reliable, convenient and fast solution from pick up through invoicing.

SMARTRAC offers a broad product portfolio of RFID transponders for waste management and recycling. Specifically designed for use in harsh environments, the transponders withstand heat, cold, rain, dust and dirt. Packaged into a robust casing, the products offer reliable data collection and enhanced durability combined with the benefits of bulk reading. Compliance with the BDE standard ensures full interoperability with further standardized components and systems.

Smartrac Technology Blends Convenience and Safety for Vitamix

Amsterdam (The Netherlands), January 4, 2017 – RFID and IoT pacesetter Smartrac is providing high-performance blending equipment manufacturer Vitamix with innovative Near Field Communication (NFC) technology that takes customer convenience and operational safety to a new level.

Officially launched on December 26, 2016, and soon showcased at the upcoming tradeshow CES in Las Vegas (January 5-8, 2017), Vitamix’s new Ascent and Venturist blenders utilize Smartrac’s NFC technology to surpass conventional blending machines in both functionality and safety. With NFC readers built into the appliance base, custom-built NFC tags embedded in the supplied and separately sold containers and cups can automatically change multiple operating parameters (up to 140!) by just putting the container on the appliance base. Thus, the NFC solution can modify program settings, button functions, ramp rates or maximum time settings making it easier than ever to prepare steaming-hot soups, frozen sorbets, delicious smoothies and other recipes that provide culinary experiences unknown before. The NFC solution could also modify machine settings and operating windows for attachments that have not yet been invented, underlining the power of the new SELF-DETECT™ Technology” concept provided by Vitamix.

Reed switches controlling the NFC tag antenna and coil
On top of that, NFC plays key a key role in several innovative safety functions, imposing button restrictions for safety if needed, for example. Combined with reed switches controlling the NFC tag antenna and coil, Smartrac’s NFC tags are a key element for a sophisticated wireless interlock system for the new blender models. Being reliable electrical switches actuated by magnetic fields, the reed switches allow the NFC tags to be read and to transmit data to the base of the machine. This highly safe mechanism enables the machine to identify the container and very reliably determine if the interlock is engaged. Since the container and its attributes can be identified, the machine’s base unit will react according to the container in use, effectively eliminating unsafe operating conditions. For example, the heat-producing soup program will be deactivated when the To-Go Cup is placed on the machine.

Fit for extremely harsh conditions
For Smartrac, developing the NFC solution for Vitamix posed a real challenge, as the embedded NFC tag not only has to interact properly with the reed switches, but also has to be molded in the container housings, surviving the molding process, years of heat and vibration under use, and potentially thousands of dishwasher cycles. Smartrac passed that test to Vitamix’s satisfaction with a customized NFC tag utilizing NXP’s NTAG216 IC. As part of the solution, Smartrac also produces the related parts of the SELF-DETECT™ container housings with embedded NFC tags and coils molded in.

“With our new products we are really elevating the culinary experience of our customers while complying with the strictest security regulations of today and tomorrow. Furthermore, we just tapped into what’s possible with NFC. In the near future there will not only be other blender models and containers with that technology, but also smartphone apps and all-new functionalities which take our customers’ experience to the next level. I’m sure Smartrac with its amazing willingness to take on new concepts and its attitude to say ‘yes, and…’ instead of ‘yes, but...’ will remain the perfect partner for Vitamix,” says Dave Kolar, Senior Engineering Manager at Vitamix.

“Vitamix is manufacturing the best and most advanced blending machines available, and we are proud to be the chosen partner for entering NFC technology. The new Vitamix blenders bear testimony to our ability to develop innovative RFID products that are tailored to our customers’ needs,” says Ted Danhauser, Vice President Sales Americas, Intelligent Things Business Division at Smartrac.

Vitamix and Smartrac are presenting the NFC enabled blenders at NXP Semiconductors’ booth on the global technology event CES 2017 in Las Vegas, January 5-8 (Booth #: Tech East, LVCC, CP-25)

SMARTRAC Enables SPYDER’S First Foray into Wearable Technology

Amsterdam (The Netherlands), December 20, 2016 – Smartrac, the global leader in innovative RFID and IoT solutions, today announced its partnership with Spyder, an international ski and performance lifestyle brand. In collaboration with Catalyst (a Li & Fung company) and Blue Bite, Smartrac’s future-oriented Experiences solution will enable Spyder to implement the latest NFC (Near Field Communication) technology into its U.S. Ski Team outerwear collection, allowing wearers to stay connected.

Earlier this month, Spyder announced its brand-new U.S. Ski Team (USST) collection. Part of the Smartrac solution to enhance on-mountain adventures with Spyder apparel includes specially designed logo patches embedded with Smartrac’s NFC tags featuring NXP’s NTAG®213 ICs, marking this outerwear collection Spyder’s first foray into wearable technology. With a simple tap of a phone or tablet against the NFC touchpoint in the logo, consumers can instantly engage with real-time and dynamic content, including Spyder’s social media feeds (YouTube, Instagram and Twitter), featured videos, ski events and world-class USST members and rosters.

“We are very excited to launch this new technology, which is designed to elevate the skiing and on-mountain experience even further,” said Julia Hansen, President and CEO of Spyder. “Our sponsorship of the U.S. Ski team for the past 27 years has been a driving force in our pursuit of technical innovation and superior performance, and it continues to lead our charge in bringing the best possible products to market.”

Smartrac’s Experiences solution is further enhanced by the inclusion of contextual and location-based information such as snow conditions, trail maps and points of interest, personalizing the user experience and continuing the customer journey past the point of purchase.

“Globally, we see a great demand for end-to-end product digitization, and our NFC and IoT solutions provide very suitable answers to that. Together with Catalyst and Blue Bite, we are proud and honored that Spyder has selected Smartrac as its technology partner to bring digital services to its brand products, which in return will bring real benefits to its customers,” said Christian Uhl, CEO at Smartrac.

Close cooperation for a pioneering achievement
The USST collection can be characterized as a pioneering achievement, made possible by the close cooperation of all partners involved. Catalyst, a global supplier of retail solutions, initiated the program, while Blue Bite, a leading IoT company focused on driving digital engagement through physical objects, powers the mobile technology element. Spyder intends to embed its Experiences solution into multiple product categories beyond outerwear, enabling brands to turn physical products into digital connections, revolutionizing consumer journeys and product lifecycles.

This is the first project that Catalyst and Smartrac have delivered since announcing their partnership in September 2016. As a Li & Fung company, Catalyst is in a unique position to champion the digitization of retail and apparel across Li & Fung’s extensive customer portfolio.

“This solution shows how much potential there is in wearable technology. Smartrac’s IoT platform and solutions, coupled with our capability and expertise in embedding smart tags at the factory level, offers retailers and brands compelling opportunities to digitize their products,” said Ian Billetop, Managing Director, Catalyst.

“We are excited to be a part this collaboration and bring value to all stakeholders. Users are able to engage with Spyder products on a higher interactive level, while Spyder receives consumer intelligence and brand recognition. This is a win for all parties involved,” said Mikhail Damiani, CEO of Blue Bite.

As part of this initiative, Smartrac, Catalyst and Blue Bite will collaborate to leverage the Experiences solution and embedded NFC technology across Spyder’s other product categories in the future.

Smartrac and its market partners will showcase Experiences live at Retail’s BIG Show in New York City, 15-17 January 2017. Meet us at booth #1433.

This method expands upon current use cases and creates new opportunities for value-added products and services. For example, it provides brand owners a means to simplify their RFID compliance needs by making all product tags, labels, and packaging RFID-ready and then enabling them on an as-needed basis. Additional use cases include inventory management, asset tracking, authentication, retail theft prevention, consumer engagement and others.

Dan Knotts, Chief Operating Officer for RR Donnelley remarked, “We are excited to enter into this agreement with Smartrac, one of the world's leading RFID providers. This agreement leverages the scale and expertise that our respective companies possess, allowing us to bring innovative RFID solutions to customers across many market segments, in whatever form they require. Our joint developments with Smartrac will also enable a wider variety of RFID-based value-added services, helping to broaden adoption of RAIN UHF RFID technology.”

“We are very proud and delighted to enter into a ‘collaboration of equals’ with a Fortune 500 company like RR Donnelley. This collaboration will not only strengthen and broaden our product portfolio but also boost our company’s development abilities and support our transition into a provider of solutions that are based on RFID and IoT technology.

In particular, we will take advantage of our joint strengths to drive IoT innovations in smart labeling and packaging”, says Christian Uhl, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Management Board, Smartrac Technology Group.

Smartrac Launches World’s First Passive Temperature-level Sensing Inlay

Orlando (FL, USA), Amsterdam (The Netherlands), May 3, 2016 – RFID technology leader Smartrac has announced Sensor Temperature DogBone, the industry’s first passive RAIN RFID temperature-sensing inlay. The new sensor inlay combines previously unattainable levels of accuracy and cost-efficiency. The latest addition to Smartrac’s sensor inlay family focuses on the logistics environment – cold-chain management, grocery or agricultural applications.

Launched at the RFID Journal Live! 2016 tradeshow in Orlando, Florida, this innovative product is the latest development arising from Smartrac’s successful cooperation with sensor specialist RFMicron.

Based on Smartrac’s moisture-level sensing inlay Sensor DogBone, and also utilizing the proven RFMicron Magnus® S3 chip, Sensor Temperature DogBone offers a maintenance-free and battery-free temperature-sensing solution to business problems for improved product management and quality control.

In addition, the new inlay retains the basic moisture-sensing capabilities of its sibling, as the IC provides the option to read the sensor code and on-chip RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) value to detect how much power the chip is receiving from the reader.

Accurately sensing temperatures from -20°C to +65°C
Sensor Temperature DogBone senses temperatures ranging from -20°C to +65°C. The sensed temperature is digitized into a 12-bit number and wirelessly communicated to off-the-shelf readers using a standard UHF Gen 2 protocol. The 12-bit number can easily be converted into a precise temperature measurement.

The typical accuracy is ±1°C using one-point calibration done during wafer manufacturing. Alternatively, two-point-calibration is available. This technique means that the tags are calibrated at an additional higher or lower temperature point, defining a temperature range where higher-than-standard accuracy is achievable.

Affordable solution serving a wide area of applications
Sensor Temperature DogBone can be deployed in environments where active or semi-active sensors are not practical or economically feasible. FCC and ETSI compliant and available in wet label format, Sensor Temperature DogBone is easy to implement, and works on different low- and high-dielectric materials like cardboards, plastics, stone, wood and construction materials.

Intended to serve new and existing markets, such as industrial, perishables, healthcare and Internet of Things (IoT), it provides great performance at a very reasonable cost level. By leveraging its temperature and moisture-sensing capabilities, an ever-wider range of use cases and applications is conceivable.

All in all, the new inlay boasts a long lifetime and full recyclability. Sensor Temperature DogBone works in the 860-960 MHz frequency range and comes in a die-cut size of 97 x 27 mm (3.8 x 1.1 in), with an antenna measuring 89 x 24 mm (3.5 x 0.9 in).

“With Sensor Temperature DogBone, we are expanding our highly successful product family of passive sensor inlays based on RFMicron’s Magnus S3 chip. Like its siblings, the new Sensor Temperature DogBone will provide the basis for a large number of applications that would be inconceivable without RFID sensing technology pioneered by Smartrac and RF Micron,” says Dirk Boltersdorf, Head of Product Development and Management, Intelligent Things Business Division at Smartrac.
