TOMRA AT EUROSHOP REVEALS DIGITAL SOLUTIONS AND SMARTER REVERSE VENDING TECHNOLOGIES

TOMRA Collection Solutions and its smarter new reverse vending offerings will be on show at EuroShop, the world’s largest retail trade fair, in Dusseldorf on 5-9 March. TOMRA will showcase new products that make the TOMRA system – which collects bottles and cans for reuse and recycling – a triple-threat package of innovative machines, digital experiences and service.

Smarter reverse vending machines (RVMs) will be in the spotlight, as TOMRA expands its industry-first Flow TechnologyTM to more RVMs in its range. TOMRA will debut the industrial Bulk Collection offering for recycling centers – a new market segment for TOMRA. The company will give a sneak peek at a new concept machine: TOMRA’s most compact and urban RVM to date. Also new is T-70, a standalone RVM unit with minimal footprint for smaller stores.

RECYCLING AND SERVICE GO DIGITAL
Just in time for EuroShop, TOMRA has officially launched TOMRA Connect, a comprehensive portfolio of digital products to extend and complement RVM usage and ownership. TOMRA Connect gives retailers new control, analytics and consumer engagement opportunities, for maximum uptime and enhanced customer service. This includes the brand new Receipt Control refund validation, Notify + Assist in-store RVM notifications and TOMRA ReAct consumer rewards program.

TOMRA’s worldwide network of service offerings has also made the digital leap, with more RVM care moving online – so that customers experience service as hassle-free, and even invisible. At EuroShop, TOMRA Service will demonstrate how its online tools ensure many maintenance needs can be identified and resolved proactively and remotely, even outside store opening hours, for fewer field calls and the greatest machine uptime.

2017 marks TOMRA’s 45th anniversary, and the company will talk at EuroShop about its history and how it will shape the future of reverse vending. TOMRA strives to lead the resource revolution and will also be discussing reverse vending’s unique contribution to reuse and recycling, toward a circular economy and “the Cleanest Loop”.

TOMRA EXPANDS SMART RECYCLING TECHNOLOGY, UNVEILS NEW REVERSE VENDING SOLUTIONS

New markets and applications in focus

TOMRA Collection Solutions is expanding its industry-first Flow Technology across its portfolio of reverse vending machines (RVMs), which collect bottles and cans for reuse and recycling. The technology brings greater convenience and efficiency to consumers and sites offering the machines, typically retailers.

TOMRA Flow TechnologyTM is the world’s first 360° recognition system in RVMs. A connected system of cameras and sensors scans each recycled container so rapidly that the objects require no rotation, so the user can insert containers in a faster, continuous flow. However, TOMRA’s approach goes beyond the basics of 360° recognition. Flow Technology’s smart anti-fraud features ensure industry-leading security and accuracy, and help defend the integrity of the recycling system.

NEW REVERSE VENDING PRODUCTS
TOMRA is pursuing a broad portfolio of products for different applications – from the smallest corner store, to large-scale returns for industry. The variety builds on TOMRA’s flexible technology platform, and opens up new opportunities and markets.

Previously available exclusively in TOMRA’s premium T-9 and T-90 RVMs, Flow Technology has been such a market success that it is now expanding to brand new products across the TOMRA range:
  • T-70 has joined T-90 in TOMRA’s InPac product range, which combines the consumer interface and container storage in one standalone unit, for a smaller footprint. T-90 serves stores receiving higher volumes of containers, while the compact T-70 is ideal for stores with medium volumes and limited space.
  • Bulk Collection sees TOMRA enter a new market segment, with an industrial offering for recycling depots, redemption centers and counting stations receiving large volumes of containers. Now commercially available, TOMRA’s Bulk Collection product is uniquely compact and flexible. It builds on TOMRA’s system architecture and modules, for applications outside traditional RVMs.
Other products are also previewing as TOMRA enters new markets:
  • A concept machine has found its niche as the smallest in TOMRA’s portfolio, designed specifically for use in small, urban convenience stores. The machine also uses advanced spectrometer technology to recognize specific sub-types of container materials.
  • The entry-level H-10 and H-11 RVMs feature the largest touch-screens in TOMRA’s range, at 21.5 inches, for greater consumer interaction and engagement. Now available, H-10 and H-11 were developed in cooperation with one of the world’s largest suppliers of municipal smart recycling solutions.
All RVM products come as part of the three-pillar TOMRA system, spanning reverse vending machines, service and the new TOMRA Connect digital solutions. The comprehensive TOMRA Service offering and worldwide network of qualified technicians give local support and ensure maximum machine uptime.

“We promised that T-9 with TOMRA Flow Technology would be the first in a new generation of reverse vending machines, and that new generation has now arrived,” said Ingrid Solberg, VP of Product Management at TOMRA Collection Solutions. “TOMRA constantly looks at the needs of retailers, consumers and regulators to solve different challenges that markets experience. We aim to create the preferred portfolio of collection products and be the market leader for innovation, at the forefront in ensuring value and engagement for everyone involved in the recycling process.”

WHY WE MUST STOP SEEING PLASTIC AS WASTE

Reuse and new mindsets are vital in achieving a circular economy

We need to stop viewing plastic as waste, and instead view it as a resource – and an opportunity. Together we must take up the challenge of converting the global population to a mindset where materials such as plastic are seen and treated as reusable and valuable.

The linear economy model of take-make-dispose has been accelerating for the past 40 years. At its heart is a culture of waste: viewing products as disposable, with little regard for what becomes of them once discarded. The linear economy does not work for the planet. It never has and it never will. Linear processes waste time, money and resources – and are simply not sustainable.

A plastic bottle derived from oil takes tens of millions of years to reach you – and yet all that is lost in just five seconds, when it is tossed in a bin or littered on beaches or streets. The linear economy is a failure to see the bigger picture, and a failure to consider how future generations will utilize the same resources we do.

THE REUSE AND RECYCLING CHALLENGE
Cold, hard fact: the earth’s natural resources are finite. If oil deposits dry up, we cannot wait 70 million years for more to form. We are buying more and consuming more – and as the population grows, so does the problem. New ways of thinking and acting are required on a global scale to move us toward a circular economy: an economy that closes the resource loop, gives back to the planet and protects future generations. But how do we do it?

TOMRA Collection Solutions is focused on addressing this challenge. TOMRA Collection Solutions’ contribution to the circular economy is providing the tools that enable the reuse and recycling of bottles and cans that could otherwise end up in our landfills, streets and oceans. Our more than 75 000 reverse vending machines installed across the world receive over 35 billion empty drinking containers every year.

Reuse and recycling play a key role in closing this loop and ensuring lasting value, both for the end product and the original resource. Recycling in general addresses the problems of the linear economy by finding a new purpose for disposed materials, like turning plastic bottles into other products such as fleece or carpeting. This open-loop recycling reduces the need for raw materials in making those new products, in turn saving energy.

Reuse goes a step further: items can be used again and again for the same purpose, without changing their chemical composition. An example is the glass bottles that can be sent back to the producer for cleaning and refilling, a global tradition going on more than 100 years. Refillable PET bottles have existed for several decades.

However, even a plastic bottle that is not designed for refilling can still become a new plastic bottle. Reverse vending installations like TOMRA’s play a unique role in driving the circular economy, because containers – whether refillable or not – that are collected, sorted, compacted and recycled through reverse vending machines give high material quality and purity. The materials can be used again and again, in a continuous, circular loop.

Many beverage containers we throw into today’s single-stream waste system get too dirty to be turned into new containers, due to contamination from other types of waste. By separating these containers for collection in reverse vending machines, plastic materials stay in the loop and get a new life. Wastage is minimal, with little need to bring new resources into this loop – further saving energy, and almost eliminating reliance on virgin materials. And, as long as plastic materials stay inside this loop, they cannot contaminate groundwater in landfills, litter streets or harm marine life. At TOMRA, we call this closed-loop recycling the Cleanest Loop. Used plastic bottles are not waste; they are an opportunity.

THE ROAD AHEAD
The unsustainable approach of take-make-dispose needs to stop. We must work together to change the perceptions, attitudes and behaviors around plastic, in order achieve a truly circular economy. Moving towards reuse and closed-loop recycling is the only way we can help to optimize resource productivity and reduce the requirement to harvest finite natural materials.

This can only be achieved by acknowledging that our current resource consumption is unsustainable, and taking accountability for that consumption. By embracing a culture of reuse and bottle-to-bottle recycling, we can close the loop and safeguard our planet for future generations.

TOMRA’s vision is to be a leader in the resource revolution. Through constant research and innovation, we are creating the technology to bring about optimal resource productivity and work towards a circular economy. To find out more, visit www.tomra.com/our-mission.

REVERSE VENDING GOES DIGITAL: TOMRA LAUNCHES TOMRA CONNECT

Retailers can now enhance consumer engagement, insight and in-store management

TOMRA Collection Solutions has officially launched TOMRA Connect, a comprehensive portfolio of digital products for TOMRA's reverse vending machines. The machines collect cans and bottles for reuse and recycling. TOMRA Connect gives retailers new insight, improves operational control and ensures a smooth customer experience. It also brings new opportunities to dialogue with consumers through consumer engagement and in-store marketing.

The move brings the Internet of Things to recycling and makes the machines smarter, more insightful and more engaging - extending the value of retailers' investment and benefiting users, beyond the core functionality of redeeming beverage container deposits.

The new portfolio offers several categories of digital products:
  • Control advises store personnel when an installation requires attention, provides guidance, helps to secure deposit receipts and offers a fleet view for retail chains.
  • Analytics provides access to reporting and actionable analytics, as well as opportunities for customized business intelligence and data mining.
  • In-store Marketing turns reverse vending into a marketing and donation touchpoint, empowering retailers to communicate with customers through on-screen promotions and on-receipt entry coupons.
  • Consumer Engagement builds a personal relationship with end users through consumer identification, loyalty program integration and even a managed recycling loyalty program that can be offered to consumers.
BUILDING THE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE
The launch of TOMRA Connect completes the three-pillar TOMRA system, spanning reverse vending machines, service and now digital solutions. TOMRA Connect unites previous local offerings into one portfolio, available in all 60 markets where TOMRA has its 75,000 reverse vending installations. Around 25,000 reverse vending machines are already connected.

The TOMRA Connect launch also unveils three new digital products:
  • Notify + Assist (Control) give store personnel real-time notifications and intuitive guidance when machines require attention.
  • Receipt Control (Control) ensures deposit-refund receipts are validated and devaluated in real time at the point of sale, so that retailers need not worry about attempts at double redemption of receipts.
  • ReAct (Consumer Engagement) lets consumers earn points to redeem rewards or make donations, and share recycling activity to social media. It can integrate with existing store loyalty programs. Tens of thousands of users in the US have already earned millions of points.
"TOMRA Connect is quite a unique offering in the space. Just as smartphones made us expect more from our handsets than simply making calls, with a smart reverse vending system, your store and customers can get so much more from the recycling experience," said Aleksander Mortensen, head of the TOMRA Collection Solutions Digital business unit.

"TOMRA Connect opens up new possibilities for retailers. It allows retailers to understand machine usage patterns, prioritize tasks and better plan staffing for different times of the day and week. It shows how well the machines are cleaned and when. TOMRA Connect even measures queueing, so retailers can explore with TOMRA other ways to make customer service hassle-free."
