Breakthrough in Saudi Arabia: Wincor Nixdorf supplies to Al Othaim Markets
Wincor Nixdorf has acquired an important customer in the growing Saudi Arabian market in the shape of the grocery chain Othaim and will supply around 900 BEETLE POS systems along with peripherals to the retailer’s more than 100 supermarkets and hypermarkets. Othaim is thus replacing its old PC-based POS systems with state-of-the-art, high-end systems that are also geared toward future checkout requirements.
Wincor Nixdorf was able to fend off well-known competitors. The customer was persuaded not only by the systems’ functionality, but in particular by Wincor Nixdorf’s service footprint in the Middle East and its ability to accomplish ambitious rollout plans. The solution was piloted and the company was awarded the contract in 2010. Since then more than 600 systems have been installed. The entire rollout is scheduled for completion by mid-2012.
A further criterion that swayed the decision in favor of Wincor Nixdorf was its flexibility in implementing customer-specific wishes based on the tried-and-tested hardware platform. For example, logging on by checkout attendants by fingerprint was integrated in the overall system. “The systems’ homogeneity ensures very high availability and employees praise their ease of use. That’s slashed the time and effort required for training,” says Abdullah Edris, IT Manager at Othaim.
Al Othaim Markets Company, which is headquartered in Riyadh, is the second-largest retailer in Saudi Arabia in this segment and has more than 100 stores which vary between hypermarkets, supermarkets, wholesales and convenience stores.
